The Environmental Health Department works to preserve and promote the health of the public and the environment. We investigate environmental health issues and health hazards that affect the community and are charged with enforcing regulations and laws that protect the health and ensure the safety of District residents. The Environmental Health Department inspects food service establishments, day care, nursing homes, hair salons, and other facilities for compliance with public health codes. We also reviews plans, issue permits and perform soil testing for septic system installation ,test and monitor water quality in pools and bathing areas and investigates nuisance complaints i.e.: animals, refuse, bulky waste, oil spills, and other environmental concerns. The District also provides a wealth of other services to support individual and community environmental health efforts. This great responsibility is carried out through collaborative efforts on the Federal, State and Local levels.
